Back then you never saw millifarads or nanofarads either, so anything with a M was unambiguous. Sometimes even values like 100pF were written as .0001 microfarads. Fortunately those days are gone. There is enough confusion in the world, and sloppiness with units causes real harm. It needs to be stomped on and pointed out for the stupidity it is whenever it comes up, especially considering that's it's no harder to get it right.
