Ok, I've GOT to do something about this ancient web server that cranks out the FAQ pages and archives (since 1992!) of this list at http://www.piclist.com And this time I have about grand saved up to do something with! Windows 2k3 Web server costs about $300, so I have about $700 for hardware.... Not a lot, but with your help, perhaps enough? I want to purchase a small rackmount, mid range, web server. If you have a used one, know someone who does, or want to contribute, please let me know? Features I DO need: - 1U rackmount. It makes a HUGE difference in collocation price: Just as an example http://www.colocation.com/Colocationlosangeles1u.html - Windows 2k3 compatible: NO! I will NOT run *nix / LAMP. I respect anyone who can, I can't. Don't ask the pig to fly. - Drives: ~200 GB RAID-1 10KRPM the content is only a few gigs, but 2k3 is a hog. - RAM: 2GB minimum, upgradable to 8 or more. I'll up it as I can. - Ultra low power CPU's and excellent cooling. Heat and power loading makes my collocation bill go up. Rack hosts want a cool running, low power machine. - USB cables for external hard drive backup. All of them have USB right? Features I DON'T need: - Gigibit or other ultra fast network card. This thing is going on a DSL connection. 100 M is plenty fast. - Hot swappable RAID 5 etc.... A nice little RAID 1 array is just fine. I don't mind downing the server for an hour to replace a hard drive. - Screaming fast quad CPUs with massive heatsinks and fans. Ye olde PIII 800Mhz averages 18% usage running... err... an old OS... Even with 2K3, I don't think I need anything really amazing... Thanks in advance for any advice or offers! --- James Newton (piclist archiver and FAQ host) mailto:jamesnewton@piclist.com 1(949)743-1447 phone http://www.piclist.com/member/JMN-EFP-786 P.S. , I want to say thank you to a few people for making that money happen: - http://www.shultzie.com/ who have consistently contributed $5 a month to support the site for years and years. THANK YOU! (if you need antennas, check these guys out, and tell them I sent you please) I can't tell you how much it means to me that someone gave a crap that I make this stuff available on the net. - Roman Black for selling his Linistepper kits through me http://www.linistepper.com - Ash Rolls for selling his RLC units through me and now allowing me to make them locally (I pay him a royalty) http://www.piclist.com/techref/io/serial/rcl1.htm - Google Adsense for paying my monthly co-location bill. I would have shut the site down years ago without them. -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
