You could use the pins that connect to D4 - D7, RS and R/W as inputs and read six keys at once. If you have six keys or less, you don=B4t even nee= d a strobe pin. If you ground the R/W pin, then it is possible to read five keys with each strobe pin. The only pin that can=B4t be shared is the LCD EN pin. Normally all the strobes are at high-impedance (it is good to pull them up with a high value resistor). In this mode you can communicate with the LCD in the normal way, forgetting the keys. To read the keys, put all pins that connect to the LCD in high-impedance, except for EN, which goes low. Then set the strobe pins low one at a time (the others remain in high-impedance) and read the multiplexed pins. If you have six or less keys, then you don=B4t need a strobe, just connec= t the low side of the keys to ground.
