Only somewhat related: The famous Soviet bug in the Moscow US embassy plaque
found during renovations was reported to have been duplicated and improved
by the British and used against Eastern bloc countries for a long while
afterwards*. Copies also said to have been supplied to the US for their use
AFAIR. 'What goes around comes around' principle.

Works on harmonic reradiation of the exciting signal. Early remote powered
RFID lookalike :-). The embassy was reported to have been awash with RF -
thought to have been aimed at biological interaction but perhaps intended
for bug activation.
