If we are talking Windows PC's, I have several times using Maxtor (Seagate) software cloned HD's to replace drives, and/or changed out motherboards, graphics cards, etc. with no problems. It will either find the right drivers if they were previously installed or part of windows. Yes sometimes if it can't find the drivers, it can be a time consumer to find the right ones though. Kubuntu seemed to do it also, but don't have enough experience with the dual boot to comment.
