:: think they would be vulnerable to a 'shearing' type of accident: :: imagine a lonely full-size a in an otherwise flat surface. Now :: imagine a chair that scratches along that surface. Something will break, if :: not the plug then the receptacle or the PCB. Would it not be possible to have the socket for you gadget exposed on the top side of it's box/board (facing upward towards the ceiling, on the wall side)and then by using a right angle socket the cable with plug would approach from the left or right - chair or furniture scraping wouldn't be an issue - so long as the short loop of cable from ground to gadget is carefully positioned.
