I use VirtualBox and WinXP inside the virtual machine to run MPLAB on my linux box and works great with PICkit2. The reason for this setup is that even if PICkit2 is suooprted by that command line tool (and with piklab) only the programmer feature you could use by this way so you would loose 3/4 of the functionality of the device (ICSP Debugger, UART Tool and Logic Analyser). I guess you can do the same with Parallels and PICkit3 if the USB is well supported by the virtual machine.
