You could look at an Echelon  FTT-10A datasheet/manual for an example of
what they think is possible on free topology twisted pair networks. 

Basically 500m of wire, one terminator, 64 nodes, 78kbit, but that is with
transformer isolated transceivers specifically designed for 78kbit.
