I Amazing Bob, I did the exact same thing, although a couple years after that. It was a Pentium 233 running 98 IIRC sitting in the trunk. I used a serial IR receiver and IR remote to control winamp and a character LCD display connected to the parallel port for feedback (along with a volume control and the power button). It worked quite well, but the inverter always rebooted when I started the car, never got quite as far with it as you did, still, you brought back alot of memories.
