Not sure what they do, but you could use a placeholder (e.g. $CopyYears$ in CVSNT) and have the script update it with the years of the first revision and the current revision, with the specific formatting (comma, dash, whatever) being hardcoded in the script. The exact mechanics how to implement something like this depend on the version control system.
