Did you actually check the datasheet? The "nominal" 4.6v brownout level could be as high as 4.87v in practice. That gives you just 130mv head room from your 5v nominal supply... Sounds like you simply selected an inappropriate brownout voltage, possibly coupled with small voltage transients on you design.
