I've been having quite a bit of fun with one of these 16*24 displays:

This has an intelligent controller and is self-refreshing, so there is  
a lot less continuous demand on the cpu.  It's fast enough to do  
animations even through the rather slow Arduino libraries, so a PIC  
should do fine as well.  And it's REALLY hard to beat the price!
