And to protect yourself from harm while checking the batteries, go down to your local auto wrecker and see if you can get enough of the little plastic terminal covers that get put on the 'hot' battery terminal when they are in a car. These will protect you from touching the terminals accidently, or inadvertently shorting across a battery with something metal, while checking the electrolyte.
