XFCE is not really that fast but more full-featured. I have not found any really good impressions about KDE for Ubuntu (or if you prefer Kubuntu) ever since I used 5.04. No exception in 9.04. The startup time and logout time are both ok, faster than Fedora 10. So that is a positive. But I got no sound when playing MP3, similar to what I met when I installed Arch Linux the first time. There is startup sound. The mixer shows the correct device, just got no sound from other applications. Maybe this is a pulse-audio problem with KDE. By comparison, Gnome just works without any issues with 9.04, as always even since 5.04 (ok I admit I had problems with 5.10 last time). Anyway, then I tried to see if Samba performance is better than Gnome (as is the case with Arch) or not. Not really. I got even worse result than Gnome. It was 2.2MB/sec under Gnome and now it is 1.8MB/sec under KDE. So I guess KDE for Ubuntu or Kubuntu is really not giving me a good impression. Maybe I will solve the problems sooner or later. But the first impression is not good at all. -- Xiaofan http://mcuee.blogspot.com -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
