There are several performance tweaks for SMB/CIFS that are well known and others that are less known, there is a Howto: http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/speed.html This is not necessarily the ultimate tuning guide, there is no replacement for an expert (ha!) admin.
