Do you have a link to or a copy of a Bosch CAN spec that defines the physical layer? The Bosch spec I know (see ) says that "the scope of this specification is to define the transfer layer and the consequences of the CAN protocol on the surrounding layers" -- and with that specifically exclude the physical layer. They also write that "there may be, however, much freedom in selecting a physical layer." Also, on page 4 of part A of this document, they add "CAN" in parentheses to the object and transfer layers, but not to the physical layer, kind of implying that there is no CAN physical layer (as opposed to the transfer layer, for example). They use similar wording in the introduction of part B (page 34f).
