You need to be aware that modern laptops don't always have their RS232 
ports at spec levels - you need to check if you really do get -3 to 
-15V and +3 to 15V logic 1 and 0 respectively.

If it reaches -10 or -12v you should be OK - some equipment can be a 
bit pernickety at +/- 5v from a real Rs232 port.
