Seriously, I don't think it is arbitrary. When i type i use very often =

the keys in the middle of the keyboard (under fghj). Times i can the =

entires words using only the keys of the middle line. I repeat - the =

placement is not too arbitrary.

your use. I think you can adopt this ;)
