Pete, I've used an MFC-8820D for toner transfer. You do need to set the iron to the highest setting, apply lots of pressure, and sort of rub the toner on. You need to sand the board with very fine sandpaper (or similar) to give the toner grooves to grab on to. You also need to set the printer to use as much toner as possible (high quality, etc). You then soak the board and the paper under warm water, and gently rub it off. Someone suggested printing on the wax side of the backing of an adjesive label (like a UPS shipping label), apparently the toner comes right off and sticks to the PCB and not the paper.
