I bet it's the brushes to the rotor connection. I had a problem like this on 
a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire, and a 2001 Kia Spectra. On the Spectra, you could 
see the voltage jump up and down, and the battery would eventually die. On 
the Sunfire, the early warning consisted of the ABS light coming on -- just 
like in John's case. :)
