The difference is that the cheaper ones tend to have 'hot spots', the expensive ones are more uniform. Or are supposed to be. You can test for these by hanging a piece of aluminium foil in the tub, the ultrasonics will punch holes it in. By putting it in various places you can find the weak & strong areas. Of course if nothing happens to the foil then your cleaner is broken.
