For instance, Lawicel makes a USB to CAN and RS232 to CAN converters: http://www.can232.com/ http://www.canusb.com/ Someone told me recently that there are schematics and firmware available for a clone of this device. The protocol is very simple, and there is even some software available for it, including examples with source.
