That sounds like a fairly simple boost regulator design. 4.8V input to 9V
output (assuming you are trying to replace alkalines). If you want a
simple, easy to use, DIP chip, take a look at the ADP1111--I've used it
multiple times in the past and I'm not an expert on boost regulators.
