I'd second the Zebra recommendation as they are an excellent piece of kit but I'd not have said they were 'small embedded' printers? I'd also consider looking at the Epson OEM range if it's still around, they used to have a great range of thermal/impact printer mechs for embedded applications, possibly under Seiko Epson branding.
