If you spend more than an hour of your time on a project, it's likely that the "niceness" of a higher end architecture will justify the extra cost. There are, of course, other factors: for example, you may already own and be very familiar with the 16F tool chain. In this case, the extra expense of switching to a different architecture may not be worth it. However, IMHO suggesting that a person new to PICs start with an 16F, is doing them a bad service.
