:: ne member, and electrical engineering lead, who is taking :: the lead role in instructing everyone how to solder, is insisting :: that :: 420degF is all that is needed to make leaded solder joints since :: the melting :: point for leaded solder is a little under 400degF. One thing you haven't mentioned, are these PTH, SMD or great hulking BNC/RS232 connectors that are being soldered?. For class 1 equipment - any crap soldering that isn't for medical, military or life saving purposes the temperature standard is 270 deg C - that is for PTH components excluding connectors. For class 2 - 270 deg C Class 3 (medical and life saving equipment) 330 deg C That is assuming leaded solder. Lead free solder is hotter. It also depends somewhat on the type and manufactuer of solder that is being used, as I assume you are in the US, look at Kesters website for recommended melting points etc for their range of sodlers.
