Thanks guys. I wired up everything as shown in the schematic - with
the capacitor. My battery shows voltage at 2.7 volts. I tested using
the serdisplib test package but I don't see anything on the LCD
display. Even when I apply power, I don't see anything at all.

Could my low battery voltage be the problem? It's at 2.7 volts. Also,
when I just apply power to the LCD, what am I supposed to see?
Nothing? Because that's what I see - nothing.
