I have been running MPLAB in VMWare on the mac (OSX) for over a year 
now. The USB works fine.

One note: You have to be aware of your USB devices and sometimes 
manually connect the Microchip USB device via the VMWare interface, 
especially if you have a laptop that you plug and unplug as you move 
around. I have only run 2 versions of the Olimex ICD2 knockoff and can't 
comment on PIKkit, Real ICE, or other devices.
