I have been running MPLAB in VMWare on the mac (OSX) for over a year now. The USB works fine. One note: You have to be aware of your USB devices and sometimes manually connect the Microchip USB device via the VMWare interface, especially if you have a laptop that you plug and unplug as you move around.
