In class we use VMware with my pcikit2-clone-board. Works OK. 
Occasionally a USB port is connected to the wrong machine (host instead 
of the simulated one), plugging into a different USB outlet solves this 
(re-plugging into the same often does not).

AFAIK VMware is the only virtualiser that handles USB.
