It is actually quite different. MPLAB ASM30 is based on GNU Assembler which is not very user friendly. To be honest, I find GNU Assembler one of the worst assembler. There are very few examples for ASM30 from Microchip. I think they tend to assume that your codes use C30. But you can of course code in ASM30 if you like. It just takes more time. In any case, the two help files located here should give a good start if someone wants to use ASM30.
