And yet in the case of learning C, which I am attempting to do (in addition to PIC assembler), most career as well as recent graduate programmers I've spoken with whole-heartedly recommend the Kernighan / Ritchie book, which is now 30 years old! So apparently the fundamental structure of the language as defined 30 years ago is still valid today.
