I have a handheld GPS (Lowrance I-finder Expedition C) that uses a SD card for map memory. The SD card is programmed with their Map create software. 3 years ago when we got the unit, the biggest SD cards were 2 Gig and are formated FAT, limiting the drive size to 2 Gig. Half the USA will fit on the 2 Gig card. Copy protection requires that a specific SD card USB reader be used to write to the card so the GPS can read the info. With the cheap availability of much larger cards (8 Gig), it would be nice to have the entire USA available (and maybe Canada too, but that is an additional charge for the data) in the GPS on one card. The larger cards require FAT32 format. This isn't a huge thing, but would be nice. Some of the issues I see: 1: The Map create software is Windows based, minor changes to allow FAT32. 2: The dedicated card reader would have to be modified to allow FAT32, or allow a generic card reader be used. 3: The GPS firmware would have to be modified to read FAT32. This might create problems with internal memory capacity and bringing in a sector of data at a time. Apparently the data is indexed, and this might create index issues. The firmware can be easily updated with a SD card. The Map Create software is used for many different model units. Looks like a lot of work, but is this worth discussing with the manufacturer, and hope they might want to do an update.
