On the other hand USB2 is fast enough for most people and in the high
speed external hard drives market firewire 800 and eSATA have a
considerable headstart over USB 3. eSATA in particular is as almost as
fast as USB 3 (and given what happened with USB 2 it would not surprise
me if eSATA is faster than USB 3 in pracitce) and can be connected to
the drive in the enclosure with a simple wiring adaptor.

USB 2 displaced firewire because it was cheaper and integrated in the
chipsets, but sata is also integrated in most chipsets and hard drives
and it's no huge deal to bring a port out externally. Furthermore USB 3
(unlike USB 2) will need new connectors which don't look cheap to me.
