In the case in point I (OK, I fess up) was not overly careless.
Not overly.
And all would have been well.
But the school smoking club hated the school troible-getter-into-er so, as 
he was seen as the bomb carrier (he wasn't), they decided to get him into 
more trouble.

They could have been badly burned for their efforts. Maybe a little worse. 
Unlikely to have been killed, but they acted with supreme stupidity.
While my role was also pretty stupid they excelled me by several orders of 
Darwinawardiism.
The device was where it was because it was deemed less risky to leave it 
there until next break to give it a chance to do its thing. 30+ pairs of 
ears were listening for it. Where it was was very safe itf left alone. Knock 
on door. "The headmaster would like to see Ca..-Vi.... . Whoops. I'll be 
next. I was.

The headmaster must have been even more cool than he always seemed - and a 
smidgeon unwise as well. His office could have been severely rearranged.
(Soft shell very thin aluminium. ?100 gram plus charge. No compression to 
speak of but awesomely fast burn rate. Would have made an extremely good 
noise in an office. And it burnt VERY hot and fast.It left no molten metal. 
All the metal burned :-).About equivalent to what is used in the SS SRB's 
but better faster and cheaper.
