NFS is "native" to linux, for example you can easily create diskless machines that access everything over NFS. 2. NFS supports all the native FS stuff, i.e. group and user permissions. Using SMB results in confusing and annoying permission issues that can be a bear to deal with, never mind the loss of the wonderful security that user and group permissions can give you. Frankly, unless you NEED to connected to a windows machine there's no reason to even have samba installed.
