If Irfanview can't keep up with images but another program can then file_size/load_rate for Irfanview is higher. It MAY be that the other program is loading data faster but highly like;ly that a tru 'movie' oriented program is presenting lower resolution images. Using Irfanview with 6 MP imaged from a DSLR for file sizes in the 1MB to 4MB range with < 2MB typical I get about 10:1 compression on the largest file at JPG 85 and 1600 x 1064 resolution. (ie 1600 x preserve_aspect-ratio). JPG 85 is better than almost any eyes and brains want at videoish speeds - even at 8 frames / second. Increasing the JPG compression even slightly more gives substantial improvements. So, I suggest that 8 frames / second is a challenge for Irfanview BUT that a lower file size wouldstill give a superb result. An new feature of Irfanview which I had not tried until I wrote this email is to compress to a prechosen file size - eg 100 kB (using the RIOT plugin). You can eg (in my case) save a 3000 x 2000 x 2.3MB image as a 2\3000 x 2000 x 100 kB RIOT compressed image OR change the image to 1600 x 1064 version (which is saved at JPG 85 = 225 kB image) and THEN transform it to a 1600 x 1064 x 100 kB RIOT image. To my somewhat surprise the 3000 x 2000 x 100 kB RIOT image appears higher quality thatn the 1600 x 1064 x 100 kB RIOT image. This is obviously something I need to do some catching up on!. This way, if yiu have eg a DVD and N images you can size the files tpo just fit. This does have the unfortunate effect of compressing the densest detail photos most and the least dense least. . An alternative would be trial percentage resizing, but that is less satisfactory for other reasons.
