Right now I am in the position of drafting a new design that will likely have removable storage. I am leaning toward the use of a USB flash drive over SD because of it's greater prevalence - and the USB stacks already available from Microchip. FTDI also has the new Vinculum device which looks useful: "VNC1L also transparently handles the FAT file structure communicating via UART, SPI or parallel FIFO interfaces via a simple to implement command set. The VNC1L device features two USB Ports which can be individually configured by firmware as Host or Slave ports.
