Hi Xiaofan,  thanks for the reply. Here's a link to the pdf.

Page one shows that the uPD78233GC is 'ROMless' ... and that the 234 has 16k 
Mask ROM   ...  and the 78238 has 32K of OTP ROM.

That's why I was hoping that just replacing the chip would solve my problem 
...  unless my understanding is wrong?
