I guess it is a cut down version of Real-ICE (both use high speed USB and FPGA based design). But it does one thing Real-ICE can not -- to power the target. The learned the lesson of ICD 2 here. They probably take similar design from PICKit 2. Hopefully they can boost the current driving capability of both Vdd and Vpp (PICkit 2 has poor Vpp driving capability).
