I'd try seeing if /dev/sda1 can be accessed at all. The OP's fdisk
/dev/sda only confirmed that sda exists, sda1 won't exist until the
kernel re-scans the partition table, which may not have happened. A
simple less -f /dev/sda1 (as root) will do the job.
