On the whole the Altium footprints are pretty good. But as Xiofan said, process differences in production environments can become significant. One thing that influences footprints where I work is the use of in-circuit testing and flying probe testing. We will often have to extend the pads of things like TQFP or PQFP packages so that the probe can land. Another factor is the differing sizes of components. We often have to put rather large things like D3 power devices on the same board as BGA's and 0402 passives, so we need to ensure we get enough solder on the big packages whilst not flooding the little guys. What Altium version are you using? I have been a Protel/Altium user for probably 20 years - since the DOS days - I am currently at 6.8 something. At the $job we are a Mentor Graphics/PADS-PCB house (and I don't do any PCB design), I have a small 'side' business which is where I use Altium.
