It seems that "IR" LEDs are in the 850-950nm range. If I remember right, there are some favorite points, possibly because of particular compounds used. I sortof recall 870nm and 940nm as popping up often. In practise, most receivers will work with a emitter anywhere in that range, especially at close range.
