I don't have one, and I'm not deep on Microchip's day to day product evolution, 
but I've periodically seen talk of problems with the PicKit 2 on the list, and 
some revs that are good and some that are broken, some that have red buttons 
and some that have black ones, etc.

Can anyone advise whether the current, as-sold-on-their-website version has any 
problems or is it a 'good' one? I am depending on your wisdom.

A specific part number or link would be appreciated if there are different 
'versions' and only one or two are worthy. ;)
