I think it would have been smarter of them to look like they were paying luke warm lip service to supporting Atmel parts if the acquired the company, then let some rumors leak that they would in fact ditch the product line quickly. That would scare new designs away from Atmel, driving the price of the company down, making it even easier for Microchip to acquire them.
