Hi Russell, I bought a Canon DSLR a couple of years ago and so far I think it was a good choice. Previously in film cameras I have used Minolta, and I don't think it was the best decision, but once you get started buying lenses it's really too late. I like Canon's choice to put the stabilization in the lens. It seemed like a stubborn decision of quality over commercialism and I admire that. Canon has always been very popular for sports photographers, too.
