Probably someone still uses > the Vista can help. Firstly I myself is using Vista now because that my old XP desktop died last week. And I was supporting my wife using Vista since last Christmas. Blog: http://mcuee.blogspot.com/search/label/Vista She was originally ok with Vista but got more and more frustrated since she needs to use some program for her study. Even though some of the programs claimed to be compatible with Vista, she still had many problems with them. So, I just convert my wife's PC to XP SP3 last month due to her complains. It was a hard process since HP does not provide drivers for her Notebook V3619AU. It took me the more than 4 days to figure out the drives (mainly the chipset, graphics and the worst is the sound card). I believe the sound card driver is still not right as occasionally it comes out some noise. For me, I have no plan to downgrade my Vista machine. So far I am ok. Microchip's programs work ok. PICkit 2 runs nicely. There is no parallel port in this PC, so my cheap JTAG for ARM will not work. But I had access to J-Link. Another no-brand USB Infrared adapter does not work due to driver issues. Other than that, most of my hardware works, including an old Compro TV card (which never works under Linux) By the way, I had quite some problems with my new desktop with Ubuntu 8.04 due to faulty BIOS. And FreeBSD did not even boot. http://mcuee.blogspot.com/ Still I feel XP is much more stable and much more compatible. At work I have an XP machine (Dell Latitude 620 with integrated graphics and 2GB RAM) with lower spec than my current Vista desktop but it runs quite smoothly even with many more background process running. And I tested Asus EEEbox with slow Intel Atom machine but XP runs quite fast under it. So you can still get XP machines. And here in Singapore XP license is still readily available in shops with similar price tag to Vista. So I general I think XP is better than Vista. And I think it is a bad ideas for notebook vendors (like HP) not to release the XP drivers. I also think XP is still a better option than Linux for most of the people, especially for the people here using PICs and other MCUs. By the way, my wife told me once that Vista+Office2007 reduced their efficiency by 50% for her study group last year. They were doing a project and one classmate brought her laptop with the combination and they managed to produce less than 50% homework due to issues with both Vista and Office 2007. So they changed to XP+ Office 2003 (standard in their university) and efficiency went back to 90+%.
