Right, and another thing that is very appealing is how well documented it 
is: there's a very comprehensive 900+ page manual in PDF. Alas...

If you have VB.net Express 2008 installed, open Toolbox->Components, and 
find the SerialPort component. Drop it on the form, and you can be happily 
sending and receiving messages within minutes. :)
