It is necessary to unplug the USB connection briefly and reconnect it for each drive to be recognised. Once reconnected the system 'finds" the drive withing about a minute of reconnection and then precedes to 'leaf' through all its files. Stopping the 'leafing' process (whatever it's doing) seems to have no adverse effect. The drive is then available for use. > > ii) When previously mapped for sharing across the local network, are now no longer mapped as accessible drives. Each drive must be (manually) reidentified as shareable and have permissions set. It then goes off on another leafing through session (setting folder permissions it says) and after that is good to go. I've had no problem with this, I always have a Seagate USB-SATA external drive hooked up to my XP box at work. The only times I've had troubles is if, while the whole system is running, I try to plug another USB device in while in the process of doing a backup to previously-mentioned Seagate drive. Perhaps it's the USB-SATA chipset in the enclosure? Sorry I don't know what the one I have uses. But I can try to figure that out if it might be helpful.
