Such circuts are fun, but lack good efficincy without very careful 
optimisation and are generally hard to control to produce consistent output 
across the battery range. I have built many different discrete circuits over 
the years and can obtain good results with enough complexity and/or magic, 
but having someone "do the hard work" inside an IC is appealing if the price 
is good.
