PICkit 2 does has a serial UART tool, but it is only TTL level, you cannot connect it to RS232 Level of signal directly. Funny N. Perhaps. More relevant is that USB/Serial (or parallel) adapters don't adequately emulate or support all the IMPROPER ways of using a port that used to be so popular. We ought to develop and standardize a "bit twiddle" USB peripheral so that we can still put all sorts of random hardware out there and talk to it. Alas, once you have to buy or build a special device like that anyway, the twiddled devices become a lot less attractive. They USED to be neat because you could connect something made of jellybean parts to a standard PC for very small cost. Remove one of those pieces, and you might as well buy a picKit2...
